When I first started gardening I used to dread any kind of pruning because I didn’t understand the importance of helping the plant divert energy where you needed it to go! While growing plants and getting them ready to be transplanted outdoors you want to do everything you can to make sure it creates a healthy strong root system. And one way of doing that is removing lower leaves and removing any buds or flowers created by the plant. I love my girls! But taking care of chickens isn’t for the faint hearted. Depending on your set up you have to give them water, food, and collect eggs every single day. Farm life can be hard work but it’s always worth it! Today I’m digging up the trenches in between our garden beds that we have filled with woodchips and allowed to compost for 3 years. The soil is then put onto our beds to provide much needed nutrients to our plants in the spring. Our farm stand is coming together quite nicely! Even though it is the end of season we have plenty of eggs and sweet/bell peppers. I have always struggled with preserving the things I grow. Freezing peppers is my new go to! I used to make salsa and pepper sauce and bbq and can all kind of things that included peppers. This left me overwhelmed and burnt out during growing season. Now I just slice or dice my peppers, lay them on parchment paper and freeze overnight. This week I took my children to Washington DC. They choose to visit the African American museum of history and the holocaust museum. While both these places were emotional for me it wasn’t until my partner and I were having a discussion at dinner that I came to a realization. The holocaust museum displayed raw photos of starving people, people stolen from their homes, stripped of their things and worked to death for 4 years. While the slavery section of the African American museum did not depict these things. Slaves were raped, beaten, starved, separated from their families for over 300 years. It was eye opening to fully see how, even now, events that involved non white people are downplayed. As someone who has black children it’s heart breaking. I feel there is nothing I can do to change the past but I can start now by teaching my children all of history no matter how raw, emotional or heartbreaking it can be #washingtondc #history #raw #homeschool #white #black #race #inequality #museum #equal #rights

Rosemary Ridge Farm was brought to life out of love and necessity. I fell in love with cultivating the earth, nurturing small seeds into medicinal plants.
